How to Attract Goldfinches
Goldfinches are an especially sought after bird, because in the spring the males turn a vibrant yellow and brighten any backyard. To attract these birds, place some niger/thistle feeders in your yard year round. Niger feeders are special tube or sac feeders, with tiny holes to accommodate the small size of the thistle seeds. Try placing several of them in different locations around your home, to provide lot of feeding options for these shy birds. An important note about niger/thistle feeders is that because of their design, the old seed at the bottom can easily become damp and compacted. This is highly unattractive to goldfinches. When refilling the seed in your feeders, refill from the top one time and the bottom the next. Many niger feeders have removable caps on both ends, just for this purpose. Another more natural way to feed your goldfinches is by leaving old flower seed heads in the fall, such as marigold and zinnias. They provide an excellent treat for goldfinches. Try a couple of these solutions and soon bright goldfinches will be flittering around your yard in no time.
