Feeding Birds

Where Should I Put My Bird Feeder? Seed feeders:

It is best to set up your bird feeder in a quiet place, that is still easy to see and convenient to refill. The feeder should be close to natural shelter such as trees or shrubs, which offer refuge to other birds as they wait for their turn to feed, and a place to hide if the feeding sight is disturbed. Pine trees are the best, as their thick eaves not only buffers from winds in the winter, but offer year-round hiding places from predators. However, it is important not to locate your feeder too close to cover, as branches can provide good jumping points for squirrels and cats. Feeders should be about 10 feet away from the tree line. For ground feeders, you can provide protection and resting places, by placing loosely-stacked brush piles near your feeders.

As much as it is wonderful seeing birds up close, be careful placing your feeder near windows as birds may collide with them. To help birds better see your windows and not just a natural reflection, try applying decals on your window, or hanging wind chimes in front of them.
